Make sure you shake it enough
So I’m writing this review before freezing and using.I read other reviews mentioning difficulty opening to fill. I was expecting to have difficulties since I often need help with child-proof lids. However I had no trouble at all with these. Maybe some get cross threaded, making them more difficult.I’m glad I ordered the clear, because it really helped me see what was going on.I added photos to help you see. Each ice pack comes with the dried gel powder. The directions say to tip the pack so the powder isn’t in the handle. Then add 1 cup of water & shake to dissolve powder. It did take quite a bit of shaking to completely dissolve all the clumps and be sure they (dry clumps) were out of the Handle area.Notice in my photos that the funnel nozzle is in fact too large, as others have mentioned. I had to kind of fold it to get it in the mouth of the ice pack. Then you’ll see in the last photo, looking down inside, that it creates a bump to slow down the flow of water. It may be better to just pour straight from a container with a pour spout. I did have a small funnel that fit, so I used that instead of the one provided. After fiddling with the rubber funnel, the gel had really thickened up quite a bit. So next the instructions have you pour in the remaining 6 cups of water. Squeeze gently till water comes to top of mouth of ice pack Screw on the lid and shake for one minute. I did set a timer on the stove. Because fiddling with the funnel took extra time, the 1 cup of gelled water was so thick, it did take me more than the minute to get it all incorporated into all the water evenly. Again- I’m really glad I got clear, so I could see what I was doing! If it’s not all mixed in completely, I wonder if that can affect the performance of holding the cold.Anyway, there was still air pockets in the shoulders of the bottle when closing the lid.I repeated the process (minus using their funnel) with the second pack and without the extra set time from fiddling with their funnel, it was much easier mixing in the remaining 6 cups of water.I left both packs laying on the counter a while to show my husband, before freezing. When I showed him later, the gel had fully absorbed the water & completely filled all remaining air space inside. It was no longer liquidy or sloshy. Now they’re in the freezer and we shall see on another day how they do keeping things cold in a cooler.

I had been shopping around for ice packs for a new rotomolded cooler I bought a couple of months ago. I've tested ice with this cooler and it as lasted a solid 5 days with ice to spare, which is more than enough for my intended use. The ice-packs were to supplement the ice and also to use it as a primary to keep things cool.

I found Cooler Shock on Amazon and got the clear container. The container seemed a little flimsy when it arrived as if it would break when dropped. But after filling it with water and getting a gel solution, it seemed to hold its shape a little better.

Instructions were followed the first container and added cold water from the faucet, it took a while for the power and water to mix and stood their shaking it much longer than I expected. I then mixed the powder in the second container and added 2 cups of WARM water to the powder and it dissolved and mixed much faster. I added 2 more cups and continued to shake it and then topped it off with the final 3 cups. After about 30 minutes, the gel then expanded to fill any gaps and the solution in both containers was ready for the freezer.

Long story short, this ice pack seemed to last a little longer than the RTIC brand. The freezing process was more even than the RTIC, where the RTIC ones bulged. Both brands were kept in the same cooler for about two days that held a consistent 38 degree F inside the cooler. After the two days, the RTIC started to lose its ice form and you can feel the gel move around. The same was for the Cooler Shock, however it wasn't as bad as the RTIC. It would be probably last longer had I primed the cooler and filling the space with other cold items. But two solid days of below 40 temps was good enough for me.

This testing and comparison between Cooler Shock and RTIC ice packs isn't the most comprehensive nor is the validity of the testing methods were equal to one another, but I figure I'm going to be using both at the same time anyway whenever I use it. As for using the ice pack with actual ice, I'd need to do that another time.

I have only used these once but they did the job and appear to be as advertised. The slim profile allows for the packs to help maintain your cooler temperature without taking up hardly any space. They should be used with ice though and not as a substitute for ice.

First off, these are a bit tricky to fill. I put the 7 cups of water required to fill these in a watering can. Note that the rubber funnel used to fill these up neither easily fits in or easily wraps around the opening of the ice packs. I found that if you invert the tip of the cone back over itself, you can then flip the funnel over the ice pack opening. I should have taken a picture of this. Sorry. Fill the pack with a cup or two of water and then swish it around to get the salts to partially liquefy. This helps keep them from holding air and sticking to the corners. Once you put in all the water, you need to partially compress the ice pack. The directions give a good description. The hard part is then to get the air out. Hold the ice pack like a vertical sheet of paper in front of you. Then slowly rotate it clockwise about 30 degrees (air moves towards opening and out) and then back the other way counter clockwise repeating. You will have to squeeze simultaneously. At this point you will see if you need to add a slight bit more water. The last part, while you are squeezing, cap it! This is easy with help from someone else as the funnel needs to come off, the cap put on, and all while keeping the air squeezed out. I used my belly to squeezed the ice pack against my counter top to free up my hands. Good Luck! Stays really cold after freezing! Four stars due to effort needed to fill with water and vent all air bubbles.

Absolutely loved the foil version of these cold packs! Told all my friends how great they were. Also gave them out as gifts and recipients also kept telling their friends about how great they worked. The downside of the foil packs is that the exterior eventually gets “puffy” because the layers separate and it starts to leak. That didn’t happen until about a year of use. I would still continue to buy the foil version of the lunch packs because it’s easier to carry in lunch bags compared to a stiff rectangle-shaped pack.
Then they came out with these brilliant hard plastic exterior packs. I agree with another reviewer that the clear version will allow you to better see if you are thoroughly mixing the contents with water. One of the cold packs came with the mouth of the opening chipped. I sent a photo and their customer service quickly sent a replacement.
These things are SOLID COLD for many hours. Trips to multiple markets, family picnics, etc. are no longer an issue. Amazing.
My only request is that they offer smaller sizes. One about half the size would be great to use in smaller coolers.
